Welcome to Kohlroserl

Welcome to Kohlröserl in the heart of the Dachstein. The distant view from the living room is of the Schladminger Tauern with the Planai ski area slightly to the left. The plateau in front of the house extends west to Ramsau-Ort and offers extensive cross-country skiing and walking. If you look out of the rear windows you will see the dramatic cliffs of the Dachstein.

There is plenty to do here both in summer and winter, and you can be as energetic and challenged as you wish. I have prepared some notes to help you with your stay. There is also a green folder on the bookcase with local information and tourist information leaflets. There are plenty of maps and guide books to plan your routes, but please don’t take them on the hills.

There are some guides: Lonely planet Austria; Mountain walking in Austria (cicerone); Kletterarena Dachstein sud (useful for klettersteig/ via feratta); Rother Wanderfurer Dachstein-Tauern (walk 17 and 19 start from the back gate); Schitouren Obersteiermark, and ADAC Nordic winter fitness. ‘

There are plenty of games, colouring pencils and toys in the blue box in the garage for rainy days.

·      Doors – The key turns twice to lock. To get  the key out it has to be horizontal

·      Fire extinguisher – There is one by the kitchen door and a bucket of water in the boiler room.

·      Electrics – there is a box with circuit breaker switches above the stairs to the garage. In the event of a power failure there is an emergency torch by the garage door with enough power for 20mins. There are candles in the large cupboard in the living room

·      There is a 2 pin adaptor on the top of the bookcase.

·      Hoover – Small, hand-held Hoover on wall by kitchen and larger one downstairs

·      Television; in the morning channel 2 gives a panorama view of selected ski area in Austria, with weather information. Can also get info by pressing teletext button on remote. General weather is 610 with mountain weather on 612 and avalanche info on 615. Sport is 200. Press button below 7 twice to get DVD screen

·      Cooker- as it is an old cooker it takes a while to heat up and even longer to cool down so be careful when you put non-heat resistant things e.g. trays plates on the cooker. Switch to lower heat as soon as things are cooking.

·      Drainage. The house is provided with a septic tank so please no sanitary/ nappies down the toilets.

·      Bathroom- Please leaves the bathroom door open when possible to allow air to circulate, and leave the door open and the heater unplugged when you leave.

·      Heating- there are electric heaters in all the rooms. Move the red dot clockwise to increase the power. 12o’clock position is off, and 10 o’clock position is frost stat. The other heating system is a little more involved but effective when it gets going. You will find the wood burner next to the garage. The chimney control should be on 2. Then with the 3 doors of the fire open place about 10 sheets of paper and about 4 sticks of kindling light the fire. If there is a lot of smoke the alarm may go off. When the fire is going then put logs on one at a time. There are mixed hardwood and soft wood logs. When the fire is going well then open the vents in the bedroom and living room (further instructions)

·      Waste- Ramsau gemeinde (council) are very recycling friendly and encourage us to separate waste into plastic, glass, and paper. Two bins are provided for cans and other metal, and one for paper, and bottle can be taken back to Billa to be exchanged for cash or left in the box in the garage under the boot rack. Any other food waste can be tied securely in a plastic bag and left in the garage.

·      Transport- You are welcome to use our 2 bikes in garage at your own risk. They are useful for shopping and getting to walks but are not suitable for extreme use ie extended mountain trips. Buses are useful if infrequent, one bus goes past the house every 2 hours, but there is an hourly bus both to Dachstein lift and to Schladming every hour on the half hour from Steirer which is the junction near the Billa supermarket. Bus timetables are in the info basket and are also posted on the bus stops. Information about a local taxi firm is also in the green folder

·      Banks - there are 2 banks in Ramsau-Ort with ATMs

·      Shops – Billa and Spar in Ramsau Kulm and a Verkauf in R. ort. Take plastic bags with you as they charge extra for these. Only sports shops are open on Sunday Ski Willy has 2 branches in Ramsau. Ort and one on the main road by the turn off to Rittisberg downhill area which specialises in technical stuff, roller skiing, climbing, langlauf etc.

·      Safety info- Ramsau aktuell has useful phone numbers in the back, Arzt is Doctor and the nearest pharmacy is in Schladming. The Hospital is also in Schladming. Mountain rescue is 112 from a mobile but you will be charged so make sure your insurance covers this. Do not underestimate these mountains, a warm sunny day can give rise to stormy weather with unpleasant hail or snow showers even in the height of August.

When you leave. Please check that there is no perishable food in the kitchen, this includes tea bags in tea pot and coffee grounds in coffee machine. Any waste should be left in the garage securely tied in plastic bags. Leave the bathroom door open and the heater unplugged. Turn off the TV, DVD, CD players. Leave all the other heaters on frost stat ie with the red dot at 10 o’clock... please shut all the window shutters and lastly lock the door and give the key to Sonnenplatzl or as previously arranged
